Sidney Blumenthal in Salon: "As we made our way in the receiving line from the East Room, I noticed that the Georgia O'Keeffe painting that Hillary had hung, the first and only 20th century work of modern art in the White House, was gone. In its place was a nostalgic scene of the Old West."

most first ladies ( gender specific job here) get to re do the white house (remember jackies blue and white scheme?) to their own tastes. in this case western hocum. i was hoping for a trophyroom update. i guess they're gonna give back SH.

SH? I've heard Laura Bush is buds with an artist I knew from Midland by way of Dallas, who's definitely a "modern artist," and I thought I heard they'd collaborated on some "arts thing." In a lot of West Texas homes, the male does the decorating, insisting on that Western shit so he feels like lord of his domain.

Hilary Clinton did have 20th C sculpture in the First Ladies' Garden of the White House". But that is outside. This is a better link.

Lord, I wonder if that's all still there? Or if the only sculpture in the White House compound now is SH's gun and the "cross" made of WTC wreckage?

"President Bush and I want every child to be excited about the arts. The President -- and this is my big announcement -- has proposed an $18 million increase in the 2005 budget for the National Endowment for the Arts. (Applause.)

I'm proud that this is the largest annual increase in more than 20 years. This additional funding will enable NEA to develop the American Masterpieces Program without cutting current projects. The total NEA budget will also include $53 million for safe arts organizations and underserved communities.
For Immediate Release,Office of the First Lady,January 29, 2004

("safe?!" as in Shakespeare safe)
Actually (coincidental to your post?) this just in:

"June 16, 2004

At 6:10 p.m. tonight, the U.S. House of Representatives approved the Arts Caucus Amendment to increase funding for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) by $10 million and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) by $3.5 million. The amendment passed by a vote of 241 to 185. By way of comparison, last year's votes were 225 to 200 with 35 Republicans voting FOR the Arts Caucus Amendment. This year, 48 Republicans voted for the amendment."

That "safe arts organizations," so casually slipped into the speech, makes my stomach flip over.

I know! (and I have never seen "(applause)" written into a press release - I guess it is supposed to be something more like a transcript, after the fact). The coverage this "announcement" received made it sound like the money had happened. But it hadn't. Now I guess it has - just a small 8 million short.

We are having small panic attacks in Canada cause a Reform Party Tory (now just called Conservative) is likely to become Prime Minister in the upcoming federal election on June 28. Two minutes ago I was ranting to my co-workers about the complacency of entrenched artist-run culture that exists on government funding. My point being "the idea of culture being for the public good is totally outdated." But now that I see this I think maybe I am wrong. But maybe I'd rather be right (my stomach flipping too)

The NEA lost it a long time ago for us.
