Thanks. From yog-sothoth.com:

"The Star Pools" by A.A. Attanasio (New Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos): New York criminals in Haiti against a very nasty and very violent cult and their servitor. Would make a great scenario.

At a critical juncture in a heroin deal, a small time crook steps on a rock. He carries it back to his apartment. Later, the rock exudes protoplasm that enters his brain and begins transforming him. He is taken to Haiti by the abovementioned "servitor," where the transformation continues, and gets increasingly vile. Rival bad guys follow him to the Caribbean and meet a hideous end. It's the perfect combination of hard-boiled crime fiction, Dog Soldiers style ennui (the main character is a Vietnam vet turned criminal), and gloppy, poetic Lovecraftian horror. Would indeed make a good movie: John Carpenter ca. 1982.
