I've discussed Gnosticism a few times, but I haven't posted this site. It's got a decent introductory page. The Pagels book was my first encounter with the material, in the late 70's, but it took a lot of inner work and insights from actual spiritual practitioners (as opposed to academics) before I could claim any personal identification with Gnosticism. Even so, I'm certainly not part of any overt, structured group, movement, or religion. The historical material is often tied up in issues that meant a lot 2000 years ago, but are obscure now. The basic points for me are that Creation is indeed flawed, and that we reflect that fact, but it is not (as the Christians claim) our fault. In crude form, I find the Gnostic cosmology squares well with current scientific theory: Creation is the result of some sort of problem; the divine principle is dispersed, and scattered throughout, most notably in each of us. This is like the Big Bang, with everything propelled away from everything else. Our job is to put it back together again, in ways both spiritual and practical.
