how many city blocks (street and avenue) to a mile?

I think it depends on the city. Shortly after Portland had been established city planners agreed that the blocks should be 200' long, and the streets should be 50' wide. They remain so today.
Is this a trick question?

Oh, of course. You New Yorkers think it's the only city on the planet.

In Manhattan (13.4 miles by 2.3), it's 20 street blocks to a mile. Avenue blocks vary but its somewhere between 3&4.

thanks, no tricking intended. i'm trading a bit of walking for some miles on the exercise bike, which has lost what allure it ever had. spring isn't coming soon enough.
