Very bad news in Najaf:Four holes, about 12 inches (30 centimeters) by eight, are visible on the [Imam Ali] shrine's dome, AP cited one of reporters as saying. They appeared to have been caused by machinegun fire, it said. I would not be surprised if Bush had never heard of this shrine.
According to this AP story in the Boston Globe: Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt, the chief U.S. military spokesman in Iraq, said he was unaware of the damage to the shrine, but said: ''I can just tell you by the looks of where we were firing and where Muqtada's militia was firing, I would put my money that Muqtada caused it.'' It is very curious that Sistani has been so quiet. I doubt it can go on much longer.Reports of the damage to the shrine, which includes the tomb of the son-in-law of the prophet Muhammad, Imam Ali, were widely reported across the Middle East by Arabic language television stations.
