So this Firefox browser works great and since Microsoft Word seemed like maybe its been removed from this machine I downloaded a free word processor called Abidword and it works pretty well and earlier I got the notion to spend twenty bucks to get a year of dictionary.coms deluxe version because I find the out loud pronounciation key a nice feature. I have a dictionary software that does it but it's all the way down at my house, which is still occupied for awhile longer by my hippie replacement, and anyway a web based out loud pronounciation key is something a person who believes in good clean fun should have. This little Vaio laptop keyboard is ok, easier to type than I would have thought, in case you're wondering when I'm going to wrap up, I'm just practicing so....
i've been trying this browser out as well. i like it and i'm all for not using ie, but i'm not sold on the tab browsing. with multiple browsers running i can alt+tab to switch from one window to another. is there a shortcut key that i am missing to switch from one tab to another?
Is alt+tab functionality available in the Mac world? On my lap top I can determind key usage by how much of the matte finish has worn off. Alt and tab show quite a bit of wear from my frequent window switching.
The fact that MS 0ut100k fails to support alt-tab switching between calendar and address book is one of many reasons I hate that poc.
If there is not with the basic version I guess they offer upgrades, but Jim is the guy to ask. Jimmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?
Alt+tab is very much a part of OS X (for switching between open applications.) There is also another thing called Expose that is very helpful too. As a general rule there is a key board shortcut for *everything* in OS X (as there was in OS 9 and before.) This is a big part of Mac culture and I think a reason why some people come to really love using them. Operations become really automatic if you force yourself to get away from the menus.
In safari shift-command-right arrow and shift-command-left arrow move back and forth between tabs. In firefox it's control-tab to move to the next tab and control-shift-tab to move to the previous (or, also, control-page down and control-page up do the same.) A complete list of keyboard shortcuts is here.
I see what you are saying Linda. Still, I do like tabs better, and maybe it's just a matter of what you are familiar with. Clearly you don't have to use tabs with firefox. I think the main reason I like them is because I am often on a fairly slow connection. So when I am reading a page and finding links I want to read, I command-click them to open them in new tabs - and here's the key - in the background. In other words, the new tab that has begun to load doesn't steal focus off the page I am on. So I just read down the page, command-clicking all the links I want to read, and then all those links are loading in the background while I am finishing the first page. Then I just command-w to close the top tab and I'm dropped onto the now loaded page behind it.
But okay, I guess you could do that with multiple windows too.
Here's a list of tips and tricks for firefox.
And here's the mouse shortcuts if you have a real mouse (with multiple buttons and stuff...)
Oh, and there aren't any upgrades (in the sense of spending money) for firefox. No advanced features you would have to pay to get. This is a pure mozilla project. Not that this is automatically better or anything, but this browser is being created by all volunteers and will never be a part of any bait and switch "first one is free" type dealings. For whatever that's worth. It's free as in speech and free as in beer, and the license ensures this will always be the case.
coolio. thanks.
