The building Ikea tore down to build their box was an old 18th century ship building/storage warehouse. It was up for landmark review, even had some civil war history. Court gave Ikea injunction to not start any construction until landmarks decided. So Ikea went ahead and tore the facade off. Landmarks only cares about the facade to be historical so they claimed it not to be a landmark building. The court fined Ikea $500,000. Pocket change for Ikea. I say FUCK Ikea!

When I first moved to Red Hook there was a pizza joint, Sonny's club(bar), 2 bad delis, and of course the chorus of gun shots at night. It was deserted on weekends. I felt like I lived in the little country inside the city.
