Logical punctuation. Thank god. I usually follow this as it just makes sense. Putting the period inside the quotation marks, even though it's marking the end of the whole sentence and not the sentence inside the quotation marks, just seems wrong. When I started coding the outrage seemed even greater.

i started doing that recently irrespective of anything i had read because i bang my head up against the logic vs aesthetic conundrum all the time. though i am likely inconsistent as i am with most punctuation.

Someone tried to edit me once placing the punctuation within the quotation. I yelled: That's American!

on second thought im most inclined to do so for snippets that finish a sentence with a period outside the quoted material whereas the example they used at the end id probably still end with the period inside the quote as the quoted material was a sentence.

As a wise man once said, "You pays your money, and you takes your choice".

As a wise man once said, "You pays your money, and you takes your choice."

L.M., that someone was probably me. I can't stand the outside-the-marks-style. I get that it's logically more functional, but it just looks awful and clunky and puts awkward gaps and pauses in the flow. I like punctuation for the way it facilitates reading, not for its structural consistency.

If you were going to be super logical, for instance, dave's example really sould be:

As a wise man once said, "You pays your money, and you takes your choice.".

But society seems to have agreed that one period is enough at the end of a sentence - thank goodness!

Did someone just yell, "That's American!"?

I'm with Dave. Punctuation goes inside only if it's part of the quoted text. Logic is aesthetically pleasing.

Then you are with me, Mark.

  • i just downloaded the first book on audio today. this way i can still maintain that ive never "read" any fantasy novels. also, reading anything longer than a magazine article about a recipe im never going to make, like making the recipe itself, is too taxing. i tried to begin to reread proust, as i had done one summer nearly twenty years ago, and was met by a confused stare from the area that once pretended to make sense of that parade of non-randomly ordered symbols on a page.
