break it down for me jim. i'vebeen waiting to upgrade my cracked iphone 4. i was going to get the 5 when the new one cameout, but since they're not discounting the old model, maybe i should just go for one of new ones...?

Do you qualify for an upgrade from your wireless carrier? I assume so if you're on the 4 (since it's probably been at least 2 years.) If you're not overly price sensitive just get the 5S. It's great. The 5C is pretty much the old (well current, but about to be discontinued) 5 in a colored plastic body. You can save a little money going the 5C route, but with how much we all use our phones I'd go with the 5S. Just the better camera alone is probably worth it for shots of the family.

If you are super price conscious, and you are looking to switch carriers, new customers (who sign the standard 2 year contract) can get the 4S for $0.

I wouldn't buy the 5 during the next couple weeks that it will still be available.

I guess I should add that although the 5C has a plastic shell ("polycarbonate"), first impressions from around the web are fairly unanimous that it feels incredibly solid and not at all cheap. I'd still go with the S though...

thanks. i have a hard time justifying new expensive gadgets, especially when my phone, though cracked, still works. getting the old model marked down makes me feel less guilty, which doesn't really make sense. i hear the art budget has been slashed here at 6516 so maybe i will splurge.

My 4 was free less than a year ago w a 2 year plan w verison. As Jim points out. No insurance plan but an expensive otter cover.

Mike says he's through with buying art.

T/he 5C is available for pre-order now. Unusually there will be no pre-orders for the 5S. This is leading people, rightly I think, to conclude that there will probably be shortages of the 5S at launch. So I think it's likely to be hard to get the 5S initially. If true it's unclear how long it will take Apple to ramp up. Just speculation though....

  • you were right. took my cracked phone with pieces missing to verizon today and they say they have no idea when they will get the 5s, but i could get a 5c. bummer. at apple.com i was able to reserve one, available sometime in october supposedly. better stop dropping my phone.

    • more walls equal more room for art though i/we assume its money not wall space that is the issue.

i finally ordered one from apple, it arrived 2 weeks later, as promised, about 30 minutes ago and it 's all set up and i didn't even have to go to the verizon store, yay! ryley gets my old cracked and chipped one, but he seems pretty pleased about it.

Let me know what you think. Slow-mo video seems super cool in a completely gratuitous sort of way.
- jim 10-29-2013 11:13 pm [add a comment]

i'm happy. kids like the slo mo video. it's hard to know what changes are the new phone and what are just from the new os which i hadn't installed on the 4. the battery seems to deplete really fast, which is my only complaint.
- linda 11-01-2013 12:14 am [add a comment]

  • That should not be. Apple has admitted that there are a small number of 5S with a battery defect. They will exchange it. You should get 10 hours of constant use (like 10 hours of video) for sure.

  • Or, at any rate, battery should be noticeably better than your 4. If not you have one of the bad ones. Sorry about that. But should be easy to change it. Is there an Apple Store in Portland? Make a reservation online at the genius bar and then go at your time. You'll get right in. Explain, and they'll just swap it on the spot I bet. (So make sure you sync it before you go.)

  • ok, thanks, i will. It's noticably less than my 4.

  • b. seems to have same issue. I read some reports today of people experiencing this issue immediately, but then everything being fine after a few charge cycles. So I'd say let it run down most of the way and then charge to full a couple of times before despairing fully.

  • k, thx

one other complaint is that they changed the port size, so now i need to get a bunch of new chargers, and also, are there adapters for ipod players to accommodate the tiny new port size?
- linda 11-04-2013 8:10 pm [add a comment]

Yeah, it's a bummer. You can get a little add on dongle so that your old chargers will work: lightning to 30-pin adaptor, but it's $29, so still a costly solution. Might work for some docks but probably not all.
