You guys know anything about Sam Maloof?

Oh yeah. I've seen a couple of documentaries on him. Great glasses.

My father's new woodworking project, after completing the five grandfather clocks for the five grandchildren, is a Sam Maloof rocking chair. Looks fairly ambitious but I think he can do it. I hadn't heard of him before but the stuff is beautiful I think.

Pretty much done except for sanding and finishing. Came out well. Amazingly comfortable.

Next up is a Sam Maloof inspired low back chair (google image search). Here it is basically put together, but that's the "easy" part. Seems like his stuff always follows this general process whereby the piece is made with greatly oversized pieces, and then once assembled a variety of sanders, scrapers, and grinders are used to sculpt the chair into its' final form. I think it makes for a cool final look, although it certainly isn't about economizing or saving material. Probably half this wood will be turned into saw dust before it's over. All done free hand, which is quite a departure in technique for my father's engineering mind.

Below, the "Maloof joint".

Love the precise markings. Good carpenters use machinists care. To the .0001 / now he will make it lighter than air to the eye!

"he'll spend ten hours a day in his shop but ask him to take two minutes to screw in an outlet cover and he throws a tantrum."

Beautiful. Does he do his own finishing? (as in varnishing etc.)

- steve 6-11-2014 1:40 pm [add a comment]

Yes he does all the finishing, although that's his least favorite part of the job.

I guess I never posted the finished rocking chair. I'll get a shot next time I'm out there.

Nice, do you know what he uses for a finish?
