Should be visible now. Some of the page information didn't make it into the database for some reason, and this was preventing that page from being shown. Easy fix, but there is no way anyone else could have done it. Sorry about that. I've seen a few mess ups like this in the past week. Maybe those geeks at slashdot were right. If anyone has the 50K to kick in I'll gladly upgrade the backend to Oracle. But, of course, the more likely reason for these snafu's is just my crappy coding. I'll look into implementing a few more checks on those inserts.

  • thank god someone is on the case. as you can see, that post was vital for national security. unbeknownst to the uninitiated, that post is a cipher wrapt in an enigma. speaking of which, did you happen to notice that riothero was reading robert anton wilson? these precocious 17yos are really getting on my nerves.

how about the problem that once you post you have to backclick to get back out to the main pages. could those menu options in the lefthand column also be on the page that shows you your comment? are you with me? or myabe just a diminutive tree icon that will blast you out to a refreshed main page.

    • O.K., I think I have located the problem. Seems like if you go back and edit a post, any comments that have already been posted underneath it are left orphaned. Should be fixed soon (Can you guys confirm this: Dave, did you edit the riothero RAW post (I lost one under there) and jiml, did you edit the d-day post (where dave lost one underneath)?)

      • I might have fixed it. Although the problem didn't always seem to be happening, so there might still be a bug in there. Have to go eat now, so I guess we'll have to wait and see. Please let me know if any of your posts get lost.

      • yes i did edit it
        - dave 6-06-2000 9:28 pm [add a comment]

      • I don't think I edited the Dday post, or if I did/do its almost always immediatedly after posting, quickly enough so it is unlikely that anyone would post in the time between my post and(edited) repost. However, I can say that up until a few minutes ago I think I was operating from a different version than everyone else, or at least different from dave. I was getting ready to comment on this only one of the problems with my version was that the ability to comment was decreasing by the day. Meaning there would be no "comment" after a post. For some reason I went through dratfinks page and entered the tree from there and realized that his version was more the better than mine so I just copy and pasted his version (can I catch anything from doing that?) to my Netscape toolbar and now all the pages seem to work fine.

        • Wow. I would love to understand what was happening there. Can you remember any specific differences in the URL's (the old one you were using vs. the new one from Dave?) There are a lot of copies of older system versions lying around in different directories. http://www.digitalmediatree.com will always take you to the most recent version. (Plus, I try to redirect every other possible address to the latest version, but it is possible I miss some pages.)

          • http://www.digitalmediatree.com/dmt2/draw.php3?global=0:1: is the one that was becoming weird and http://www.digitalmediatree.com/draw.php3?global=0:1: is the one I got from Dave, I think.

            • Yes. The ...dmt2/draw.php3 should have been redirecting you to the newer one. Maybe your browser doesn't redirect. Are you using a version 3.0 of something? Anyway, the new one should be much better.

              • No, Version 4.72, but it's fine now.

    • If only all 17-year-olds were illuminati literate. I agree with the link-back-to-home-from-every-page idea. Isn't Jim always asking for our comments and suggestions. Will he come to regret that?
      - jimlouis 6-07-2000 2:04 am [add a comment]

      • he didnt say he would necessarily act on those comments and suggestions only that he welcomed them. information is power, non?

      • O.K., coming soon. Also, please be aware that the very ugly URL's on this site are prime for what Jorn Barger was loudly mocked for calling "URL hacking" (although now the term seems to have stuck.) That mess of colon separated numbers following the 'draw.php3?global=' is easily modified: just highlight and delete as many number-colon sequences as levels you want to ascend. Hacking off everything back to 0:1: takes you back home. Obviously this is not a perfect solution, but the idea that the location field in the browser can be used like a command line interface can be a powerful idea. Still, you guys are right that a link is necessary. Too bad I have a meeting with a Mojito in 30 minutes or I'd do it right now. I'll try for first thing in the morning.

        • that wasnt a condemnation just a reality. if you aint getting paid, youre working at your own pace. AND HOPEFULLY EVEN IF YOU ARE. WHOOPS. caps. however your robot woesdom browserfix is not the usability config we were looking for.

          • I didn't take it negatively. I like the feedback. Actually, from my point of view, you guys are all unpaid workers helping me. Sort of like guinea pigs. I guess they call them beta-testers (although in this case there won't ever be a final product.) So complain, err I mean suggest away.
