Just Ask Alex--summer is almost here cause my favorite stinky tree is in bloom (what tree is that again good doctor), and is it possible i saw a baby pigeon on my window sill??

That's Ailanthus, the notorious "tenement palm". Only the male trees have the weird smell. Not many people are fond of it.
There are all sorts of young birds right now. Just this morning I had my first glimpse of fledgling Kestrels in a church tower near the Vernon/Jackson 7 stop. Baby Rock Doves are seldom seen, but it's possible. Of course, you should make detailed notes or drawings, then get out all your field guides…

  • ailanthus

ah, Ailanthus,...aka: Tree of Heaven ...aka: Sperm Tree (local favourite) ... aka: Dog Shit Tree,... aka: Slum Tree. Sure sign of urban summer. Also, my friend kept his window open during a recent heat wave and then found a pile of sticks full of pigeon eggs next to his computer.
