Glad to see Lenny made something of himself. Does he know what Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds is about?

  • Pass the crow.
Three days after my insistance to Bill that Mr. Lipton did not use drugs I was browsing through the introduction to his amazing book "Lipton On Filmmaking" wherin he equates his first viewing of Stan Brakhage's "Prelude To Dog Star Man" with his first LSD trip.

    "My head opened up...."

He describes the swirling grain of film combined with the 24 frame per second flicker rate of the projected image and how it is more dynamic, more noticible than the granular background noise which takes place in "the human eye-brain mechanism....
"People sometimes have to down a dose of acid or mescaline before they can percieve this background noise of vision, as The Beatles pointed out in Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, or as Aldous Huxley explained more fully in The Doors Of Perception. Either by accident or through training, I am generally aware of this scintillationg aspect of vision. The clouds of grain of the visual field are closley linked to mandala design. Indeed, the flicker films of Conrad or Kubelka can generate heightened perception of eye-brain grain and produce mandala-like images, despite the fact that these films themselves are totally grainless."

"My perception of Dog Star Man and the sky in my yard (referring to his first acid trip) tie together. Both experiences unleashed a force within me. something which exists in all humans. This force is at the root of visionary experience and artistic creation."
