I'm reading the late JH Hatfield's book; one of the things I learned is that our President hates being called "Junior." All during the '88 campaign (to which he contributed much in terms of dirty political insight), he was referred to as "George Jr" or "Jr" by the press. When he returned to Texas, he began using his middle initial as a way of differentiating himself from his Dad. The press went along, of course. Since I'm a non-fan, I'm going to start referring to him as George Junior in future conversations and posts.

  • Is that correct the 3rd ? My dad is JD and I'm JW hence I'm not a jr. I thought all three names (or two if there is no middel name) had to match to be a JR. Otherwise I'm with you on the dis.

  • i can imagine few adult males who would relish being referred to in the diminutive. i still prefer something more imaginative like shrub or shrubya.

      • Technically he's not a Jr; probably all the more reason he finds it so galling. The point is not what's correct, or what we think makes him sound the most ridiculous. The point is to thwart his will. No one else has, so far (except Jeffords).

          • No sheeit, August in Texas as vacation?, as if we needed further proof of the Jrs idiocy. And when it comes to thwarting, let's no forget our boy, Cheney, it's he that has been the fly on so many walls, and has what could be an admirable perspective on American politics, if he weren't such a megalomaniacal timebomb ticking.

            • at least cheney has the good sense to go back to jackson hole, wyoming for his vacation.

              • Yeah, but he's probably just up there trying to convince a doodlebugger crew to accidently survey onto government land, suck out a little petrol on the sly. Cheney at least is worthy of some respect though, for intellect, and work ethic, unlike G.jr, for whom I can't seem to muster up a lick of respect. I just worry about how beholden Mr. Cheney is to that considerably powerful yet enigmatic group of people who have helped him pull himself up by his bootstraps.

                • James Wolcott on Junior's vacation: "George Bush is taking the entire month off at his ranch, where he will receive a Manchurian Candidate 4.5 upgrade between photo-op barbecues and long walks to break in his new dungarees."
