they will pull out the old horizontal (probably) lead (possible bronze) pipe put in pvc (if nyc building dept lets them) to connect to cast iron virticle wast pipe. pvc will last almost forever but its noisier (you hear the water sloshing through more than the other heavier stuff. i think it runs in your ceiling horizontal between his floor joists.
