i guess we will get a sense of what bush is told to think tonight during his speech at the capitol. i remember reading one story that said bush senior was in the powell camp more so than the cheney-rumsfeld hawkish clique. in the end you would think his father would have the greatest influence with the prodigal one. i just posted an nytimes accounting of the rift at the top of the response team.
Poppy Bush considers “consensus building” during the Gulf War a great achievement of his. It’s so much messier here. There are too many cross purposes for a coalition to hold together over the course of what could be a long, indistinct “war”. Tolerance for a quick strike and intelligence help down the road may be our govts best hope. The maneuvering between our new pals Pakistan and India (who hate each other) is just the tip of the iceberg. They both hope to come out of this with US aid against the other. Bush calls this a new chance for peace. If he can pull it off I’ll love him even more than Rudy.
