Francis Fukuyama has a piece in The National Interest in response to the thinking of fellow neo-conservative Charles Krauthammer. It is a pay for view article, but has been copied in full into a comment thread at Matt Yglesias' blog (it's about the 10th comment or so.)

It's not so simple as Fukuyama switching sides, or turning against his neocon brethren, but still it's encouraging to me that there is debate and self criticism on that side of the fence. I don't agree with a lot of what he says, but I thought it was well worth the time to read.

My memory is short, to say the least, but last night Barack Obama gave the best political speech I've ever heard.

I can't find the video yet. If anyone finds it I'd appreciate a pointer...

A five-year-old monkey at an Israeli zoo started walking exclusively on her hind legs after recovering from a serious illness. I find the picture strangely disturbing.

Awe-Inspiring Experiences:

Thanks to the generosity of the Templeton Foundation, a team of scholars centered on UCLA is engaged in a three-year process of exploring the world of awe-inspiring experience: also called mystical experience or primary religious experience.
The three day Awe to Action conference, one part of the UCLA program, has just wrapped up. Mark Kleiman has a quick report, and a slightly longer report.

"DeLay requested that the new donation come from "a combination of corporate and personal money from Enron's executives," with the understanding that it would be partly spent on "the redistricting effort in Texas," said the e-mail to Kenneth L. Lay"
