answers for those who question authority
Radical reference originated as a service provided by volunteer library workers from all over the United States to assist demonstrators and activists at the convergence surrounding the Republican National Convention in New York City August 29-September 2, 2004. We are evolving, expanding our services, and continuing to utilize our professional skills and tools to answer information needs from the general public, independent journalists, and activists. Service will be provided via this web site, blog, e-mail, chat, phone, in the street and Ouija board.

The tiny versions of images on the Tree in the address bar (not just the Tree logo) are sweet. When did that happen?

Cheney shot and injured fellow hunter in S. Texas. I like this quote from the ranch owner, in the Times account:

''Fortunately, the vice president has got a lot of medical people around him and so they were right there and probably more cautious than we would have been,'' she said. ''The vice president has got an ambulance on call, so the ambulance came.''

eco-cruise

"Falcon! Is it a merlin?" cried Joe Giunta, as a small bird soared overhead just moments after the catamaran left the South Street Seaport dock on the East River. Quick discussion, and it was decided that Giunta, a retired teacher who lectures on birds for the local Audubon society and has a staggering 1,020 birds on his own "life list," was correct.

Amazing Quake II mod:

You finally saw the yacht in the seemingly random bunch of dots! You can see the dinosaurs and dolphins in the Magic-Eye books! Now use your skills to free yourself from your evil extra-dimensional zombie oppressors! Welcome to Quake II as it was never meant to be.

Quake II AbSIRD is a modification of the Quake II graphics engine to produce SIRDS instead of standard 3D images.
I was never very good at seeing those magic-eye things, but it always surprised me how cool it was when I did get it. Of course the first thing I wondered was whether you could produce the effect with moving images. Evidently you can. Not sure this has any practical applications (I guess it depends on how hard it is to see and whether it gives you a massive head ache and makes you cross eyed or something like that,) but I'd love to try it out. Windows only unfortunately.

Welcome to OED Online. We're giving access to the OED so you can explore words with the new BBC TV series Balderdash and Piffle, now running in the UK (more about the series). Until 13 February, you can use the OED to look up any word starting with the letters featured in the programmes—or pick a quick link to see one of the words highlighted this week.

Until now, it had been widely assumed by geneticists that the Ashkenazi communities of Northern and Central Europe were founded by men who came from the Middle East, perhaps as traders, and by the women from each local population whom they took as wives and converted to Judaism.

But the new study, published online this week in The American Journal of Human Genetics, suggests that the men and their wives migrated to Europe together.
