ended up with a pretty good choice all things considered, steven frears the hit (1984).

  • I read somewhere that Roth's character chooses a bike chain, forceps and an antenna as his weapons in this scene but I could never make them out clearly.

  • no, i think they are beads, then just a piece of metal with a loop at one end to wear like a ring and a sharp pointy end that he can stab or slash with and the third thing looks like a chinese throwing star. not sure how he employed it.

guess it was in the linked article that it was his first movie and he had never left the uk before.

      • Watched some Seidelman stuff lately because of time proximity and it really hasn’t improved. But needed to catch up on some I hadn’t seen.

        • smithereens might pair well with frances ha.

sure ive said before i wrote a paper about the use of sound in desperately seeking susan for film theory 101. sure it was a mature and thoughtful presentation.

somehow i avoided watching making mr right and she devil in the blockbuster video store era. i remember no one was ready for streeps comedic turn at the time. now im not sure i could stomach roseanne.

    • what if i was just staring at a blank tv screen waiting for a response? not too dissimilar to what i normally do come to think of it.

watched about 15 minutes of androcles. didnt recall it was based on a george b shaw... story? im gonna go with story. and didnt realize it was so comedic in tone. expecting a more standard swords and sandals flick. did i want to watch more. not really but i do like jean simmons.

ended up choosing a film that i also did not finish tho i will... eventually. was on my dvr for years and years. perhaps multiple dvrs. watched half. could not be a more dave film yet got up to go to the bathroom. shoved some crappy tortilla chips in my face in an unlit kitchen. crack my second and last liter of seltzer that i bought this morning and decided i was too tired to keep watching. didnt sleep much more than five hours and its been a trying day. and ive been trying.

sure an answer will arrive soon.

  • seen a few of those, red shoes is always a favorite and black narcissus is one that i never think i want to see based on the cover image. seen i know where i am going and colonel blimp... finally. im pretty sure.

was gonna make you work for the daviest movie but in undavelike fashion i will just reveal it.

    frances ha.

can totally see how she had the makings of patron saint of millennial women.

      • I know B/O but since the thread turned to P/P films and you referenced Red Shoes and they also made a film called Black Narcisis I assumed a typo.

      • tried to watch the 49th parallel first but couldnt get beyond oliviers french canadian accent and also whatever else was going on. switched to the aforementioned BN and ended up taking a nap then i watered the plants which is the only thing im actually here for and really should be more aware that 90 degrees requires an afternoon beverage as well as a morning dew.

just finished up frances ha. the ending was a little too pat ultimately but what do you want from a lighthearted indie?

          • no. i just had it on my dvr for years and years and never watched it. looking at baumbachs filmography i think ive only seen greenberg. i had the sense he was like gen-x woody allen and it was going to be too precious and cringy or too obviously for me and i kept putting off watching them.

what do you think of his movies?

            - dave 8-14-2023 11:25 pm [add a comment]

          • I count myself as a fan. I don't know much of his output but liked Squid and the Whale very much. My one gripe was that the younger brother didn't figure enough in the story and found the masturbation fetish a simplified remedy to that problem and physically questionable for a pre-pubescent kid. I thought Francis Ha was great. I love his wife but thought Margot at the wedding was just ok.

            • i liked that it was funny but didnt aggressively play for laughs. all the character felt real not overbroad but did feel like they wrapped it up in a tidy bow a little quickly. didnt necessarily feel like her pulling out of the delusional tailspin was particularly earned. they just decided this is the where she gets her life on track accepts her limitations and succeeds with as small s. still, a charmer. conversely they did a nice job keeping it flowing. i liked the pacing.

            • I don't remember Francis Ha much at all other than liking it a lot. I should rewatch.
