got gifted an account. need a thread on criterion visitations.

started watching david leans the passionate friends

checking out whats leaving at the end of the month. boning up on my kay francis movies. not a great actress or maybe her roles were underwhelming but was one of the biggest draws in the early 30s. made a bunch of movies with william powell who elevates whatever he is in. trouble in paradise is considered the best film she is in. watched ladies man last night which also boasts a young carole lombard starting to figure out a comic persona but otherwise not particularly noteworthy.

  • As I remember it's one of the better car chase movies

  • Vanishing Point was my favorite car chase movie as a teen and was in nearly constant rotation at drive-ins.  I found the chase scenes so entertaining that even the artsy existentialism and indecipherable super soul storyline couldn't ruin it. Those elements were what set it apart and above Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry, Eat My Dust and most of the others, but what did I know?  Thinking about the car movies now my favorites would probably be Two Lane Blacktop, The Seven Ups, Vanishing Point and Bullit and the scene from French Connection.

  • They also have Le Mans but not Grand Prix. Also got Ford v Ferrari cued up on Hulu for tonight.

  • I also loved Le Mans and Grand Prix but they were race car movies, the chase movies were lawbreakers and cops.

  • True. Sometimes the car is a co-star. Badlands was pretty well done.

watched the seven ups. seems like there are the two variants, the gritty cop angle and the anti-hero. can we say the bullitt and easy rider are kind of the templates. throw in some bonnie and clyde and the french connection. i wonder what they were drawing inspiration from, just the beat/hippie counterculture at large and new wave cinema?

watched a little of traffic a couple of weeks ago and noticed it was on the list of 70s car films. i dont think fits snuggly into these categories with tati being an outlier even in relation to the french new wave but before i lost interest its always fun to marvel at his cinematographic sense of space.

maybe go for gone in 60 seconds. never saw it or the nic cage remake.

    • are you laughing with it or at it.....s inclusion in the category?

      • I thought you were joking.

I guess I'm laughing with its inclusion but I don't know all those films so maybe it isn't such an oddball choice.

      • im guessing its movies in the collection that fit the category to some extent, this one being 70s car movies. but maybe they get the rights to movies beyond that as well.

        Duel

        Trafic

        Le Mans

        The Last Run

        Fear Is the Key

        Super Fly

        The Last American Hero

        The Seven-Ups

        The Cars That Ate Paris

        Dirty Mary Crazy Larry

        Gone in 60 Seconds

Il Sorpassa is great and is part of criterion collection but from the 60's. Great ""twist" dance party scene. It was a global dance craze. Catch it if you get a chance.

  • watched about 30 minutes of 60 seconds. could never quite get there with the b-movie sub culture. i can appreciate the lack of polish but just for so long. so after the 70s nostalgia wears thin im kind of meh. also car chases ultimately seem kind of masturbatory.
