enjoying my criterion subscription. Watched Performance last night and started our man in Havana, which I will finish up tonight. Both firsts. Surprised how kitchen sink performance was.
havana seems up my alley with alec guiness directed by carol reed. never seen performance. watched part of model shop which id never heard of before. first american film for jacques demy (umbrellas of cherbourg) with anouk aimee and whoever the actor from 2001 was. gary something? shot in and around la in 1969 which might be the most interesting thing about it.
I watched Model Shop, and it was more interesting visually than otherwise. I'd heard of it because I have some of the soundtrack on a compilation of Spirit, an excellent LA band of the era. They had some limited success, but are underrated in my opinion, and best known lately for a lawsuit claiming Led Zeppelin lifted the opening of Stairway to Heaven from one of their lesser known numbers. The band appears briefly in the movie, and Jay Ferguson has a speaking part, playing himself, but according to the TCM article, "not doing a very convincing job." - alex 6-19-2019 1:45 pm [add a comment]

Have to differ with you that Spirit was an excellent band. I had a box set of theirs with liner notes describing the friendship between Randy California and Jimmy Page and Page's tribute to the band by using part of their song for Stairway. - steve 6-19-2019 6:24 pm [add a comment]
I don’t think artists should begrudge borrowing/stealing; once it’s out there it’s fair game. But if you don’t think Spirit is tops you’re nuts.
