I can still remember seeing The Seventh Seal as an adolescent. It was the epitome of a foreign art film: black-and-white, ultra-serious but with humor, ethereal yet earthy. It had subtitles but the cinematography was such that you could understand it without recourse to reading. It had the magic I associated with Medievalism, but it was not a fairy tale, it was reality.
