Friends of God: A Road Trip With Alexandra Pelosi

The estimated 50 to 80 million evangelical Christians living in America today have become a formidable force in our culture and democracy. But the evangelical movement is a big tent. To try and get a better understanding of the range and diversity of this community, intrepid filmmaker Alexandra Pelosi hit the road to meet some evangelicals and learn about what their influence may mean for the future of the country. Premieres Thursday, January 25

did anyone else see this? very disturbing. esp the 35,000 capacity churches and the battle cry concerts.

i saw it. those churches were scary but what was really scary was the naked politization and unapologetic theocratic yearnings of their leaders.

im always bemused those post-modern recontextualizations of subcultures in order to appeal to the flock. that grunge lends itself so well to christ does not speak well of it.

and the image of the fake beggers who look like extras from the life of brian wandering through the crowd soliciting alms from children at a christian theme park nearly made my head es(x)plode.

i agree, dave. i'm going to have to start thinking about what country to move to after this one has been totally taken over. canada's too cold. maybe south america would be nice.

well, i think the evangelicals make up close to 25% of the population. i dont know what % of them are wingnuts, however. now nearly 20% of us identify as god-challenged or godless. so i wouldnt give up hope quite yet. interesting that our founding myth is built on religious tolerance, or, at least it would be interesting to know when that myth blossomed into accepted truth. i guess the constitution has alot to do with that. of course, the christian extremists have created a counter myth that this country was created as a christian country. tolerance really was never on the agenda, just what form intolerance would take. we should be thankful that so many of our prominent founding fathers did not have much use for religion or that counter myth might be a lot closer to the truth.
