Modified owl for Egon Von Bark, who has a nice owl fact list.

I dunnow, that looks a lot like a Long-eared Owl...

Well, OK, it's got a short tail, so I guess it's a GHO, but I think the proportions are a bit off.

thanks for the link to that great owl pic of yours, Alex. I love it. Mine is nabbed from Roger Tory Peterson's bird guide and then fussed with and collaged a bit in photoshop. It looked more like a Great Horned Owl before I started messing around with it. I saw one once in the countryside north of Toronto. I was riding my bike back into town from somebody's cottage in the middle of a starry night. When I first saw the owl I thought to myself, "How did that cat get up on the telephone wire?"

Yeah, some owls look very cat-like, whereas catbirds do not (although they sound like cats.) I've seen one GHO in Central Park where they are quite rare, but last winter we had a Barn Owl, which is even less frequent, they said it was maybe 10 years since the last one, although who knows how many may have gone unnoticed. Long-eared and Saw-whet come through every year.

I read the owl fact list and am tickled over the idea of a parliament of owls.

But it brought to mind the fact that my older brothers, who loved killing and chopping up small animals to feed our guest owl, grew up to be Tory scum.

GHO is now my favorite acronym. I saw your page minutes after looking at the website of Roundshot:
http://www.roundshot.ch
which has a freaky little owl mascot down in one corner.

"freaky little owl mascot" ...wow. You said it! what the heck is that thing?
- sally mckay 6-16-2004 10:41 pm

I am going to use this opportunity to list all the wild things I have seen in Toronto in the last couple of weeks

1) a possum
2) a skunk
3) a mama raccoon and her 2 offspring
4) a baby hawk

the first 3 have been around where I live in the backyard and alley. the last was on the window ledge outside of where i work.

i haven't yet seen any owls, long-eared or great horned or otherwise.

Favorite owl mascot: familiar of Pallas Athena, badass goddess of wisdom. In the Iliad she puts the god of war to flight and punches out Aphrodite - in the tits! OK, so she’s not always nice, but she could handle Buffy or Xena no problem, let alone men…

I saw the possum too. CUTE and scared, running fast on stumpy little legs. running faster as we rode our bikes faster trying to get a better look. poor thing. First possum I've ever seen that wasn't road kill. Apparently they come to ontario clinging on the axels of trucks.

"...Tonight even the owls
are dreaming on the wing
soundless flickering stains in
the dark sanctum of the night.
They break in predatory silence
with the eerie spectral address
of dream hunters.
The terrible beaks and claws of night.

All things here writhe, twist somehow as
ciphers in the dream's earthen logic..."

Published by McLelland & Stewart in 1988).

One of my favorite shots from the owl cam i was watching somewhat obsessively this spring:

Oops- that last post was from me.

Von Bark, nice poem segment! the rest of you readers beware, however, all poetry posts are subject to my allergic discretion and may be removed without warning or explanation. I like this one.

Rob, nice owl cam shot! Who's that interloper? I think you are most likely the same Rob of Endless Parade of Excellence. For those of you who don't know the blog, it's just like it sounds (ie; endless, a parade, excellent ...also replete with virtual owl pellet).
