haida gwaii blockade
Haida Gwaii blockade, Day 5, March 26, 2005.

Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas—creator of the Rock 'n' Raven Haida Manga cartoons mentioned earlier on this blog—has posted a comment about the Haida Nation blockade of logging company Weyerhaeuser on Haida Gwaii (aka: Queen Charlotte Islands). The photograph above is from the Haida Gwaii Info Centre, part of the Islands Spirit Rising campaign. There's tons of good information on the Haida Nation website, thanks for the link, Michael.

There is also an excellent article providing background and context at The Tyee. Apparently a solidarity action is being planned for Toronto. There is information about how to get involved at OCAP's website.

I dont feel that the blockade is going to have the desired effect. All it is doing is causing the threat of dissent between the haida and White communities. Why would anybody believe taking the paycheques of the young men with families to feed impress either Weyerhaeuser or Brascan? Can the CHN members sleep peacefully in their beds at night knowing men with families are suffering financial duress, perhaps not able to feed their familys or pay the mortgages on their homes?

Is that really ALL that is happening?

The action on Haida Gwaii continues on. It is now over three weeks old. Please spread the word and encourage other citizen's to consider taking local leadership

Well the way I see it, families dependant on logging will be in financial duress in the future if Brascan continues with its logging practices in June. Haidas and islanders alike will suffer financial duress if this issue is not properly addressed now, at the optimum time of provincial elections. I know that Brascan aka Neo conservative Liberals will not receive my vote. In any case, I hope that resolution comes soon.
