"Big orange Bird" by Ed Pien

I'm totally nightblind, so the 20 images I took with my video camera of Lisa's work were all badly out of focus. Will replace with something better tomorrow. Excuses. Excuses. Ed forgot to bring a better camera for me to use. It's all his fault.

[eta: Ed has redeemed himself by providing me with a better image of Lisa's eye]

I'm glad you got some shots of Lisa Neighbour's giant ornate eye - it's very very excellent.

Yup, 16 feet of gorgeousness. The site lines for the actual show served it well as it was visible from the entrance to the show. (a damn big empty warehouse floor that you rarely see in this city anymore) There was a lot of work to take in although the space never felt crowded, I know that I missed a lot and I was there for several hours.

Michael B, Cory Lund and Alex are my new art heroes for trying to pull off the epic 'King Juda' - wire-city! To me, they did!!

I stared at the eye for long time trying to figure out why I liked it so much. I mean, its not like a big eye is an original concept or anything. This eyes was deceptively simple: just some lights on painted plywood. But the colour shifts were really intricate - the lights set in blocks that defined areas, whereas the paint was changing in a finely rendered gradient that suggested some volume. And the black centre was deeeep behind those blue bulbs. Over top of the gradients were painted scrolls that look kind of clunky in the snapshots above but were in fact super precise and ornate. The piece was super satisfying at every level of detail.

I also really liked the melting Mr. Nobody claymation video, and the slow-mo video of firecrackers going off by James Leonard.

I agree Tino. It was just lit up enough.

This was the best show I've seen in years. How about the performance art of Brooklyn-based duo OUI in five small 'peephole stages'? Body parts; sliced food; dripping liquids of questionable provenance; strange circulating loops of material -- active, calibrated voyeurism at its best! Heather Nicol's illuminated PICK ME dresses rocked out, too...

Thanks for reminding me about the OUI work, kids loved the water filled condoms, and indeed they need to know that condoms are for fun. (the debris on the floor in front of the peep holes made for total anarchy, it was really funny and very smart)

Heather Nicol, thank-you so much for reminding us about our DIY artshow culture in this corner of the world.
