Just watched the live feed on Conrad Black verdict on CBC from the Chicago courthouse.

Guilty on a few counts of mail fraud, not guilty on the wire fraud and racketeering charges, most serious guilty verdict is Obstruction of Justice, based on the security video of Black and his chauffeur removing 13 boxes of incriminating documents from his Toronto office in the middle of the night.

I linked to the out of date article from the London Independent for the quote "braying, hideous, tricoteuses".

Strange that they never put him on the stand.

From the Guardian UK:

All his life, Black has disdained his birthplace of Canada in favour of America, seeing the US as a land of opportunity and free market dynamism.
But shaken by scandals surrounding Enron and Worldcom, the American legal system punishes white-collar crimes ruthlessly.

A Black biographer, George Tombs, says: "The bubble is bursting - he's romanticised America so much as the land of the brave with a free market, private healthcare and tough people who've waged war all over the world.

Now he's come face to face with another America - a hardball America."
In all fairness he did recently make a fulsome speech to the Empire Club about how wonderful we are (nicer prisons) as reported by the CBC:
The Montreal-born businessman renounced his Canadian citizenship in 2001 in order to sit in the British House of Lords and take the title Lord Black of Crossharbour.

At that time, he was embroiled in a messy legal battle with then-prime minister Jean Chretien, who tried to block the appointment, prompting the newspaper mogul to drop his Canadian citizenship.

Black, however, is now working to regain his Canadian citizenship and said Thursday that he is not concerned about losing his British title.

"All I am doing is what I said I would do when I renounced it - that eventually, I would take it back," Black said.

[...]

Black's speech on Thursday oozed patriotism. He gave a primer on Canadian history and extolled the value of this country's veritable treasure trove of natural resources. Unrelenting demand from emerging Asian economies, particularly for our energy exports, is redefining Canada's role on the international stage, he said.

"There's much to be done. And Canada, without exaggerating our potential, could be an influence in the world," he said, adding that the United Nations is a shambles and NATO is in complete disarray.

"We must not let it go to our heads but Canada is by many measurements and by imminent potential, one of the world's great powers and I think we should get used to it."
Of course any member of an organization called the Empire Club welcomes the sensation of billionaire slobber on their ankles.

"treasure trove of natural resources"

mmmmm....treasure.....

did he mention anything about how our treatment of the aboriginal peoples ranks us in a world class league of users and abusers?

Darndest thing, but the subject never seems to come up at those Empire Club luncheons.

And remember the immortal words of Rick Mercer when he saw this image in Vanity Fair:
"Oh my God, they're down to only one chair!"

For shooing the little woman (and offspring) out of the picture after the photo op, no one's got future US President Fred Thompson beat.

He's officially Lord Black of Crossharbour, so he has first right to deflower virgins on their wedding night. Elsewhere, some people might get really pissed off about that sort of privilege, but we just shrug and say peers will be peers.

It's the fawning media coverage that makes me want to laugh and puke simultaneously."..a story worthy of a modern Shakespeare"..huh? . Maybe King Lear at his most delusional. Really, just a bad capitalist and a bit of a buffoon

Someone sent this hilarious quote from the National Post to a current events mailing list I'm on :

"He believes himself innocent, and how an innocent man handles punishment is one of the great tests of character. That is the trial that now begins."
Bless their little Ayn Rand lovin' hearts! (though those lines could have been written by that gentle, wistful mistress of conservatism, Peggy Noonan)
