An animated discussion (Catch that pun? Did you? Did you?) at simpleposie on the AGYU's current survey of artists.

See? I have the power here.

OK I opened them up again.

Because I can.

Yay! I'm posting links to Mo Collins and Michael MacDonald. These two had great physical comedy chemistry, taking turns playing straight to each other's madness. (I love sketch comedy.)

actually, I'm glad you opened them. I want to comment about the survey but in a more general way than the discussion is headed over there so I don't think it'll be cross posting.
Isn't it interesting that the only way to participate in the survey is through the web yet there is no designation for web artist, and none of the ways in which they validate being an artist include any recognition of the internet? I can see how fund raising-wise it's a good idea, but oooh I hate being pigeon holed.

I thought of that when I filled it out. But I wasn't really interested in attempting to quantify it.

yes, I noticed that too. But overall I empathise with Michael. It reminds me of my bicycle advocacy days when I was trying to get fellow artist cyclists to come out to critical mass (because it was fun). People would be all like, "What? you want me to engage in a group activity? Don't you know I'm unique?"

Yeah, I get you. My other (more substantial) worry is the conditions that make up a "successful" artist. It's like showing up for the group ride, but instead of going out as a big happy bunch, the organizers and activists get to go first, fixed gears and couriers second, racers and racer wannabes third and then commuters and weekend warriors bring up the rear (if they must).
Here's my survey.
Are you an artists (yes, no)
what's your medium(s) of choice?
How old are you?
Where do you live.

If the point is to show how many artists there are why on earth does it matter if the Ottawa Citizen wrote a review of your solo show?

I guess I see the survey containing a subtext which is to better delineate the line between the artist and the outsider artist, and I worry that this is the true nature of the survey. Or rather that the survey would be used in this manner by other people.

Sally & I were blithering about the shit-storm this afternoon (we agreed beforehand to wear wrist corsages so we would recognise each other in real life)

Michael Maranda explained his methods and motivations very clearly and with sincerity on simpleposie. I have no worries about hidden agendas as far as he is concerned, what's unfortunate is that the original letter/invite/intro to the survey hadn't come across as well as his eloquent and respectful defence.

Sally may have more knowledge and experience with the mechanics of activism than most people, not finding a survey to be invasive. I did, but that's because I felt reduced by it. Mathematics are cruel. A whole other issue is my paranoia over privacy, (lets acknowledge that I get to direct and control and edit my performance & persona on this site.) It's an expansive medium, statistics make me feel reduced, I can appreciate people's resistance.

you should have seen the first draft of the survey (there were questions about bees!)
