How he translated the nature of print into larger discussions of aesthetic power were really important...esp. for me the colour wheel work.
There is a project in the last couple of decades--to translate the ephemeral and the domestic--to figure how that work could be made more permanent while retaining its low, small and decaying qualities, Maggs idea of that project, the death of text and the death of people in the black envelopes, pulling out the aesthetic quality of invoices or the rotting of paper, or this hyper aware sense of the failures of his own taxonomies. a taxonomy will replace a taxonomy and the taxonomy that replaces the first taxonomy will fail, and so it becomes this recursive act of meaning, and failure of translation...that always made me feel weighted and sad looking at his work...he was our profound meloncholist.
