Colleen Thibaudeau's alternate summit. Photo by M.Jean

On the weekend M.Jean and I went to visit her friend, the poet Colleen Thibaudeau. We got to attend this animistic alternate summit on her front porch. Snowman, Foxy and Poly had to forgo Summer Vacation Bible Camp this year. Instead, Colleen made them study a page from the paper with pictures of all the G20 leaders. Then she sent them to confer on the porch with a little globe. Colleen explained, "I told them if any of those critters [the world leaders] came onto the porch they should bite them."

Anthony Easton, our spiritual advisor, has gently requested that we attend to this pressing matter of great doctrinal import:

Observations from Judy Rebick, a national treasure, on the odd circumstances behind the burning police cars last night and Steve Paikin, that lovely gent from TVO, witnesses a police assault on a Guardian UK reporter.

Have we gotten our billion dollars worth yet?

In more G20 art news (via Akimbo):

Movement comma movement; collective dream 26 @253469

The official city of Toronto artist secure event zone taking place @253469 on Saturday June 26 from 8-11PM. Movement comma movement; collective dream 26 is a pro-global sub-atomic art particle summit of demanding short art films, irrational video and new sound and short performance. Security costs for this extra-ordinary one night art event have plummeted from an initial estimate of over one billion billion billion Canadian to a little over nothing.

Projected short film and video works beginning at 8PM by Angela Eileen De Crescenzo, Christina Kozak, Daeve Fellows, Karol Orzechowski, Robert Morpheal, Wesley Rickert and the original North American premier of "Fish Freezing Factory" 90 seconds, Lucy McKenna, (Ireland). Featured short live performance beginning at 9PM, including "Inverted space paper femme theater @253469" and other short performance works by Istvan Kantor, Art Szombathy, Nicole Torok, Christina Kozak, Ulysses Castellanos, 469 and 253. (Free stuff will be available)

253469 is an interdisciplinary art space that is not ruled by commerce, academia, politics or common sense. 253469 is currently located at 1267 Bloor Street West (just east of Lansdowne) and is generally mismanaged by 253 & 469.

Perhaps Istvan Kantor will have one of his hissy fits in front of Toronto's brand spanking new water cannon.

What do you like better, Thought Bus or Cat Bus?

Thought Bus
excerpts from Mockingbird by Walter Tevis (1980)
"...nervous and excited now, [I] spoke aloud to the door. "Open," I said. And it opened! I got in and seated myself in the front seat, and set my tool box by me. Then I concentrated and thought: Take me out of the Mall and to the front of the obelisk. I pictured the place in front of the obelisk in my mind, just to make sure. And immediately the bus closed its door and began to roll.

[...]

My God! I thought. I think I know where this voice [in my head] is coming from. "But who are you?" I said.

"I am this bus. I am a Metallic Intelligence, with Kind Feelings."

"And you can read my mind?"

"Yes. But not very deeply. It disturbs you a little."

"Yes," I said aloud. My voice sounded strange.

"But it's not too bad. It's not as bad as being lonely." It was reading my mind. I tried to think to it, silently. Are you ever lonely?

"I don't mind if you talk aloud. No, I'm never lonely the way you humans are. I am always in touch, somewhere. We are a network and I am a part of it. We are not like you. Only a Make Nine is like you, alone. I have the mind of a Four, and am telepathic."

The voice in my head was soothing to me. "Would you make a light come on — a dim one?" I said. A bulb overhead began to glow softly. I looked down at my hands, at my dirty fingernails. Then I rolled up my sleeves. For some reason I was enjoying looking at my arms, at the fine, light hairs on them. "Are you as intelligent as [the cat] Biff?" I said.

"By all means," the voice said. "Biff is really stupid in most ways. It's just that she's very real — is very much a cat — and that makes her seem intelligent to you. I can read her whole mind at a glance, and there's very little there. But she feels good. She would not want to be anything other than a cat."

"And I don't feel good?"

"Most of the time you are sad and lonely. Or yearning."

"Yes," I said mournfully. "I am sad. I yearn a lot."

"And now you know it," the voice said.
