    • Saw the Brian Alfred show at Protetch yesterday. The image above is a tiny collage made of cutup Color-Aid sheets (it used to be Chartpak when I was in school). Those were nice, but the video, which had the same type of imagery, was the standout. It almost looked like Alfred made all the collages and paintings as a necessarily market evil while his real (fresh, innovative) work was in computer-animated video. Not knocking that, but it'll be nice when artists can just get on with it.

      • Did you go to the Armory? Anything in particular you favored? I am going tomorrow, somewhat with dread. It seems so overwhelming. Do you ever suffer from visual overload, my brain just shuts down and after I can't remember anything I saw.

      • I went the last couple of years and this year I'm passing. The art looks bad at art fairs; it's mostly about dealers schmoozing. I understand why Miami wants an art fair, but it's kind of silly for NY to have one, since art happens in abundance here year round. But because it's here and the Biennial's opening, the art in Chelsea is suddenly noticeably better. Everybody's puttin' on the dog for the out-of-towners.

          • I can't remember it happening, that doesn't it hasn't, tho. The Armory's fairly new--it's just been around a few years.

        • Here is what a friend of mine just said about the whitney:
"It felt very much like being in an over-sized building on 10 Ave in Chelsea, which is not surprising since much of the work is courtesy of Chelsea. That said, it was a little disheartening to see the curators supporting such cash-and-carry, 'safe' work.... [I] liked Emily Jacir's project which was practically the only thing with any political message, very unusual not to include more in this dark and political climate.

I'd seen a lot of the work before which adds to the bland flavor but makes it feel familiar, too. That could be why everyone's willing to not trash it as per usual. I think writers are going on the defense re: the bad rap they usually give the show and are now saying they actually like it."
and what she called the armory:
"...now on to the real supermarket of art."

In the “whole is more than the sum of its parts” department, I was at Columbus Circle today. The new Time-Warner Center is nothing great, but at least it curves, reestablishing the circle at C. Circle. This in turn makes 2 CC look a hell of a lot better, though I’m still not entirely convinced of its virtues.
