We used to just call those block letters. Gotham must be a play on gothic, a standard sans-serif typeface; it puns on the NY association, but probably without Irving’s satirical intent. Gotham is where Batman lives; Marvel comics were superior because they actually happened in the “real” New York. Back in the day, Goths were “barbarians,” or at least that’s what the Romans said (but that would get us into a whole ‘nother font.) Today Goths are a species of mopey adolescent esthete, and probably live in the suburbs.
