nice thread on toms page engaging the subject of artistic quotation. in sum, the beatsie boys raise the status of a whole bunch of found licks to maxims of universal truth though a (now) illegal practice on their under appreciated paul's boutique album. burn a copy for a friend.

The golden age of creative sampling was roughly 86-91. Somewhere there is an interactive timeline connecting songs both sampling and sampled with the crest of activity being about that period. I'll have to look it up but there's a definite bell curve before the Man (and grabby musicians) ruined the whole genre.

Sampling timeline. Requires a java plug in to load. There are two humps on the curve--1991 and 2000, the second being presumably licensed, industry approved sampling. Not sure how much of the curvature is the subjectivity of the author's choices, but interesting.

fix it in the mix...

From the beginning of playing records, the issue was getting a message or narrative across through the songs. Now it's 'in the mix' ''I think I did that. I used to keep a book of what were my top records every week, Looking back it scares me - at that time I wasn't very Christ minded. Music is too easy to make - there are Spirits in records. You really have to think that every time you change the record, the title or something about the record is going into people's heads. For me, I have to let God play the records, I'm just an instrument.'' ---walter gibbons

That's appropriate to DJing as a modern art form where the DJ is basically the instrument, the medium for other people's music.

My favorite quotation quotation is from William Hazlitt who said “You terrify me by repeating what I say.” Actually he didn’t say it, he was quoting James Northcote, an erstwhile famous society portraitist of the Georgian era who would be all but forgotten today if he hadn’t been extensively quoted by Hazlitt. Maybe there’s a lesson in there somewhere… (not that Hazlitt is very well remembered at this point…)
