Why did Clark Foam get out of the blank business?

i just noticed the article in the new yorker. just started it (its not online), that question came up quickly but was not answered yet. its a massive irony though that a product this toxic is the root component material of the most environmentally sublime sport ever to exist. well, surfing and kick the goat.

"he alluded to run-ins with the government regulators, primarily over the chemicals and equipment he used, and claims filed against him by ex-employees or their survivors: "i may be looking at very large fines, civil lawsuits, and even time in prison."

"it was not entirely clear what he was talking about, even to industry experts. None of the relevant regulatory agencies were taking any known action against him."

Hmm. I would guess "ex-employee survivors" are a real threat in a business that uses toxic resins and such, even though the threat of government environmental regulation under the current administration is non-existent.

as ive mentioned my dad was in the foam biz. he once tried to hook me up with a job at a factory in east hartford which manufactured airplane seats. i got nauseous just walking in to the place from the resins and glues. needless to say, i did not take that job. but i did work one summer in their foam production facility in east rutheford.
