The pigs stopped the free music, man. Great music and camerawork.

I like the end of the song, when the band looks over the edge of the roof to see if they changed the world.

I really only know the Airplane from reading Rolling Stone as a teenager, where they were mythologized into major political/cultural forces of a generation as opposed to just being a buncha musicians.
The little angry guy with round shades is Marty Balin, right? Who left, and then the Airplane became a Kantner/Slick granny glasses peace and love vehicle and eventually morphed into the Starship.
This rooftop thing is classic 60s aggressive grooviness.
Set up the amplified instruments on a roof in Midtown on a work day.
Yell about "free music" and "free love."
The cinematography is very "period"--it looks like the New York of Shaft or Coogan's Bluff--edgier and more vital than it is now.

Of course, I prefered the link off that page to those fancy-pants fops and their fancy-pants stage sets.

...later Mothers of Invention, then copyright fascists.

gone missing is the you tube clip with mark and howard explaining with a chart how one manager after another ripped them off for the whole turtles nut. tom never misses an opportunity to slag them because of a watershed de la soul court decision to award them $$$ for a swiped riff which would go on to effect (for the worse) the whole rap dubbing comunity. me i love the turtles anyway.

And worst of all--a string section riff--two notes. I guess their early victimhood damaged them so irreparably they could never see anything in proportion again.

it was obviously worth stealing if they used it. but yeah, id say they were suffering from compound industry damage.

Please, "appropriating and recontextualizing." Its "value" was as '60s kitsch turned into a new style of hiphop, until Mark and Howie killed the style dead.

The sad thing was the Turtles' Battle of the Bands LP was a comedy album and De La Soul's 3 Feet High and Rising brimmed with humor, until the damaged people showed up.

i dont think they could differentiate a good rip off from a bad rip off at that point. i give them an almost "get out of jail free card" for that. almost. i bonded with their music (including F and E) in real time so its harder for me to carry a grudge.

(I figured that Tom was still pissy about the buzz thing and just lashing out)

they killed it or drove it underground? there are legality issues with appropriation that keep the practice maverick. in a sense, if it were legal it would no longer be as transgressive. thats an argument any way. i dont actually buy it though.

For me it always comes back to, you're whistling a tune and I start whistling it and there's not a damn thing you can do about it because music isn't property, it belongs to the commons, like the scent of flowers in the air. But if someone likes your rendition better and tips you--that you get to keep. Also, you can be offended by my version and say why--that's your right.

vs

You are entitled to full dollar value for everything you create from everyone who uses it in perpetuity.

Philosophically A is healthier and B is the road to madness.

Like I said, proportion--where do 2 notes from a string section fall?
The courts fucked up and said B.
