rip nellie lutcher
i meant to post this on a more timely basis. lutcher was one of the best of many great musical tips i got from my parents. she hailed from lake charles la and hit their musical radar in the mid fifties while they were living in new orleans. she played a mean stride piano ably holding her own with the jazz men she collaborated with who included among others nat king cole. she sung and wrote with a wonderfully sophisticated baudy jump jive style. and bless her heart, she lived to be 94.
zoom over! is all im finding on you tube.
this cd has most of her best material. there are larger collections as well. i recommend the following songs (even the brief listens off the tasting menu) for a sense of her greatness:
Hurry On Down
He's A Real Gone Guy
Fine Brown Frame*
and my dad used to sing "A Chicken Ain't Nothing But A Bird" around the house while i was growing up.
*perhaps her greatest work
