new two level deck is timberframe construction of local mainland grown and milled cedar. thats a captains watch landing feature on the steps leading up to the second level. pay no attention to all the stuff sitting there drying out on the bench (which was used in leu of hand rail.)

these entry steps were made from chuncks of granite block that the stone cutters left behind on the property in the 19th century. vinal haven was the quarry source for much of the architectural stonework in americas north eastern cities. st john the devine church was one of the locations for use in nyc. there must be a couple of dozen major chunks littering the landscape here. its like that all over the island near the waters edge. the guys moved the pieces with log rollers, metals bars a pickup truck and a come-along to get the pieces up to the deck.

i was watching one of those mysteries of the egyptian pyramids type shows the other day. theyd float one ton slabs of granite 600 miles up the nile on barges specifically for the task of blocking passageways to the burial chambers and the riches within. granite, apparently is rock hard compared with that prissy limestone. who knew? those wascally tomb raiders wouldnt be dissuaded, however, theyd just tunnel under the granite instead.

the fog lifted mid morning and we had great sun all day. who ever is using the outhouse at the time gets to be the grand marshal. out house grand deputy is a crummy job and should be avoided.

so the first one is the inside of the new outhouse (no running water, you spritz the bowl) then the cabin interior, the sauna and sauna interior, out the sauna porthole window and then the ledge outside the cabin. the sauna was grandfathered in and built on the footprint of a small shed (its great when its too cool outside to shower). the cabin has been there since the 50's? and is the original structure on the property.
