On April 2, 1959, producer Robert Herridge recorded the Miles Davis Quintet playing the classic "So What" in CBS studio 61, New York City. The piece was taped for an episode of the Robert Herridge Theater, titled "The Sound of Miles Davis." CBS broadcast the show on July 21, 1960.

cool. i just watched a JC/MD doc (netflix) that included this performance. i ran through a half dozen other audio versions of so what afterwards and this one (for me) cooks the most. so intense, yet sooo laid back!

I grew up with this stuff playing all the time in the house, and my Dad was friends with both these guys. Didja notice how all these guys are smoking, too?

yeah. nice smoking break mid tune. heres the listing on netflix. my dad was into jump jive and boogie woogie (louis jordan / louis prima, etc), swing (ella, basie, ellington) and hee-haw era country (including bro ray). i think i made him feel bad about not turning me on to hot jazz when i was getting into that after high school. glad for the exposure i got though now. so now im trudging through my missing free-bop education. ...and loving it. ...but first, some sugarloaf going out to LM's childhood.

Two of my all-time fave albums: My Favorite Things and Kind of Blue.

You also should spend some time paying attention to Bill Evans. The guy was just fucking brilliant beyond belief.

My father and I have a real soft spot for Chet Baker, who was one of the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet. My father cried when he heard Chet had finally met his end. Did you see this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Let%27s_Get_Lost_%28film%29
