some forward thinking cities have public skate parks in place. a small problem of injury suits is a deterrent. most of the major commercial parks cant seem to stay in business in between spikes of popular interest in the sport. the civic hostility towards skaters (because of grinding damage and aggressive public space use) resulted in the backlash slogan "skateboarding is not a crime". many skate board vids include scenes of being chased off amazing public architectural features which make inadvertent ad-hoc and highly usable obstacles (handrails are just a starting point). it also hastened the rise of less invasive/destructive (private) backyard ramp skating, inline skating and snowboarding.
