i saw a documentary marathon on the history channel on the construction of caltrans a little while back. i liked the building and the de-constructive process of watching it built by episode. foundation, frame, skin, hvac, etc. i wish they would have run them in reverse order so you could go backwards in time (unbuilding) instead of repeating time (rebuilding). nice use of metal scrim in the warm california sun. it seams somewhat more restrained than the rest of his work i saw at the link you posted. in general those po-mo guys leave me cold. most of the eccentric details look high maintenance and thats disturbing to me. in the case of caltrans bldg the eccentric details are part of a more functionalist design and i can live with that. the automated perforated scrim panels are intended to open and close as needed, shielding the building from direct sun. but they have the visual effect of eccentric geometrical re-combining compositions.
