You can get the NYT without the sign in if you change the 'www' to 'archive' and chop off anything after .html (in this case '&OQ=todaysheadlines') Still a pain, for sure.
It's OK to do the sign in (although I don't out of a childish spite) but just don't give them a real email address (because they have a deal with doubleclick and you don't want doubleclick to find your real address.) They don't check for accuracy, so I'd just use no@thanks.com or some variant.
