I read Tangerine Flake as a teenager because I thought it was a sequel to Kool-aide Acid Test, which it wasn't (although in a future life if I should ever go into the lab and create window pane I will call it Tangerine Flake, even though someone else probably already has). All I remember is enjoying it less than Acid Test, but nice breezy interestingly stylized writing, although I think it was not so much about anything I was particularly interested in at the time. I think Tom Wolfe in general and early TW for comparison's sake should be on any reading list. He's like two writer's in one, the early v. the later work.
