Reading articles like that makes me very nervous. I understand where it's coming from, but in another sense it's distinctly unfair. How many times did they go to Jo-Jo's? Once? And they got the wrong glasses for a wine? Seems like you would be honor bound as a serious food critic to go back at least three times and try to figure out whether this was a fluke (maybe someone dropped a whole tray of big glasses early that evening and things were tight for the night before they could restock) or some real problem with the management. This article had the tone of just bashing high end places with whatever random anecdote they could put together because, well hey, bashing the high end is fun! Not necessarily good food reporting though.
Does keep you on your toes. Or at least nervous.
Ever been to Millie's in Silverlake(LA). It used to be run by a 300 pound lesbian named Magenta.
Their motto was something like: " Millie's , It's the Food, Stupid". It was a punk spectacle & always
packed. Magenta finally OD'd or something & new management made only one change: good service. The place crashed. Sing a song of critics/ pockets packed with lye/ pray that they will peter out/ pray that they will die...but what do I know, extreme porcophile that I've become.
magenta wasn't a lesbian.
the motto was, "Millie's - where waitress is queen"
she didn't OD, she wasn't a hard drug user.
she lost the business to the feds because she didn't pay her taxes.
