78 OTAFUKU
Think it might be a new nightclub owned by Joey Buttafuoco? Nope-it's an Osaka-style street-food stand where the specialty is a gooey pancake called otafuku, which means "cook what you like." While the range of offerings doesn't match that of a similar establishment at the Japanese mall in Edgewater, New Jersey, Otafuku provides a fine intro to the genre, featuring ingredients such as shrimp, unsmoked bacon, and squid. Also offered: fried octopus balls (gee, I didn't know they had balls).
236 East 9th Street, Manhattan 353-8503

((The Ocu-balls were fun but just ok to me, the pancake is made of cabbage with toppings....I will do a road trip to Edgewater soon))

78 OTAFUKU is one of my regular quick lunch spots.
Yohan, the Japanese mall in Edgewater (no english link) used to provide free round trip van service from Port Authority every 30 min. I assume they still offer this service but it's been a few years since I've been. It's well worth the trip. Great super market, food court, book and manga shop, toy store, and ceramic dish shop (dish shop? there must be a better term)

  • sietsema is SUCH a show-off... i mean, does he really live in fear that someone out there is questioning his deep knowledge of exactly which azerbaijani kebab house in staten island has the best off the menu goat stew? having said which, god bless him and thanks to the voice for running him...i am NOT a big fan of jessica harris, who seems to like, well, you know, pretty much everything she eats!

the crazy thing about that 100 cheap asian eats was where he called congee village the top all-around chinese restaurant in NYC! this is now in dave's backyard (or rather, he's in their backyard since they face Allen and dump out their crap on Orchard)

i used to eat a lot of $3 specials over rice, which were good, but not best-in-nyc stuff...the congee's good, i guess, if you really like congee (i think it's better if you ate it a lot as a kid, like cream-of-wheat). never done a big dinner there though. is it time for us to pay a visit?
