Food suggestions from the past week.

Sunshine Market in St. Helena. Tiny market, very well stocked. 20k+ products, 2k+ suppliers.

Go Fish and Cindy's Backstreet Kitchen in St. Helena. Owned by Cindy Pawlcyn of Mustards. Go Fish is larger, more upscale. Raw bar, sushi bar, an regular kitchen. Had a very nice sole from CA North Coast. Backstreet Kitchen smaller, more informal. Had a braised rabbit tostada. Mmm.

Bouchon Bistro -- Owned by Thomas Keller (French Laundry).

Greystone Restautant -- CIA's in house restaurant in St. Helena.

Chouchou French Bistro. Small, bustling neighborhood bistro.

I was inspired by the owner of Sunshine market describing it as an "ingredient store". Shopping Whole Foods today, it was so clear it's not. It's closer to Trader Joe's -- dominated by prepared food rather than basic building blocks. For example, I couldn't find salt. I'm sure there was a salt bar somewhere with pink, black, smoked, etc. But I'm not going to dump two cups of fleur de sel in a brine. Boxes of kosher salt simply were not present in the baking aisle. Okay, perhaps I'm nit picking on the salt. But ... they did not have whole chickens in stock.

(Filled with the enthusiasm of the newly (re-)converted.)

In St.Helena: go to Woodhouse Chocolates, my favorite is a brown butter caramel...also if you are interested I'll arrange a tour of my friend's small winery/vineyard on Howell Mtn. (Spence Vineyards)

I walked past, but should have gone in. They had life-sized dark chocolate bunnies. The white chocolate ones were very cute, but I can't abide white chocolate. Next time my Mom is out I might take you up on Spence Vineyards.
