RIP inventor of the dry rub

Went to the Rendezvous on epic early ‘80’s road trip to Memphis visiting long-lost college roommate Jay Wells. We were far from “foodie” back then, but our hosts made a point of giving us a BBQ tour, including an outdoor event with a bunch of mobile units set up in a field. It was mostly all pretty good as far as I remember. Great trip: we ate lots of BBQ, saw the Mississippi, the Peabody ducks, Graceland, the Circle Jerks, wrestling… I think Steve DiB was there, strictly from Hungary (he always did like to eat.)

Did we go to that bbq place? Always wondered about that since that joint is spoken about in such revered terms....All
I know is we ate badassBBQ everywhere it seemed...Actually been trying to recreate my memory of that ol dry rub when making ribs..God knows how close its possible to come to that stuff, not realistic prob. But crap, that was one awesome trip, yes...Re: Hungary--Alex is of course referring to our encounter at a local bar--which I believe, had a horse shoe "court"(?) inside--at about 1:pm with a local bar dude who, upon, hearing me speak asked "Where the hell are you from boy?" "New York City I proudly responded" "Nah", he said "Your from Hungary"

SDB, Chuck and I ate some killer bbq in Memphis on our LA to NYC driveaway delivery gig.
Back story for the rest of you:
We were allotted 6 days to deliver client's '84 Buick from Phoenix to NY. We took a little detour - Phoenix to LA - partied for 4 days - LA to NYC in 2.5 days. 85 mph on cruise control driving straight through, back seat was for sleeping between stints at the wheel. We stopped in Memphis to see Chuck's parents and chow down. Delivered the client's car 6 hours late, he tried to keep the deposit. Dispatcher ordered him to pay, said he was lucky to get his car at all. Once in the city SDB introduced Chuck and me to Alex, we introduced them to Bill Schwarz...That trip was also my introduction to hushpuppies and pulled pork sandwiches with coleslaw.

    • You mean like the bit where Chuck and I did all the driving?
Ok, you did manage to go the whole way without any sleep, keeping the drivers entertained and awake so you won the endurance award. And by now you surly have your license, so I really can't chide you anymore.
