there is also a variation unique to Miami with a different mash up of ingredients. I’ll search it out. Only ever called it a Cuban. Like Kramer and “The Cubans.” (Seinfeld reference)

AI: The "Miami" Distinction The "Miami sandwich" specifically refers to the Cuban sandwich prepared without Genoa salami, a key ingredient in the Tampa variation. This difference in ingredients is the core of the long-standing Tampa-Miami Cuban sandwich rivalry

also, they are served with potato sticks ( not potato chips). The history of that can be verified but to my recollection Thats correct.

  • interesting. says there was an italian immigrant population in tampa which inspired the addition of salami. also potato sticks in miami, plantain chips in tampa. and maybe the bread was a little crustier in tampa.

to the best of my recollection potato sticks were trash though im sure i ate them. i was trying to remember the brand we got and found it but dont recall it. i just recognized the can. any guesses? no utzing, i mean, cheating.

  • Potato sticks came in a tube, like pringles. Or a shorter tube tub? They were ok by me but you could stab your gums if not taking care. Can’t recall brand name offhand but should recognize name.

  • tampa was the real deal for cubans who were drawn there in the 19th century because of the cigar rolling trade. miami was post castro.

  • Also, Tampa’s Cuban population had a jump on Miami owing to their cigar industry. (“Have a Tampa”) Miami’s Cuban population exploded during the early 60’s air lift program. So I don’t doubt Tampa being the early bird.
