The best meal I've ever had was at the French Laundry. Although I eaten at a small sampling of the places on the Chronicle's list, and I've had some mighty fine meals elsewhere in California, the French Laundry is in a different league. The level of attention to each of the courses was simply amazing. I had the nine course tasting menu, which also has a few little extra "in-between" courses. And being with a large group, I was able to check out other stuff. All told I think I had at least one bite of 21 different courses. We also had the opportunity to share many different bottles of wine, so we could put together lots of nice pairings. What I really wanted to do was to slip into the kitchen so I could witness the alchemy in action.
