Lupa is on Thompson Street in the block just above Houston. That puts it in the West Village on the SOHO border. The atmosphere is casual, but the pace is frantic. The room and the food could be described as Italian peasant rustic. The staff is friendly, but harried. The prices are high, and the diners tend toward the foodie side, so even with the casualness this ain't no Olive Garden. Dressed down, but with a lot of buzz. Possibly the quintessential downtown NYC restaurant experience (as if it's possible to say such a thing.) Kids would be no problem.

Reservations are an absolute must for dinner. Don't even bother going without calling ahead (probably a few weeks.)

Worth the effort. Please let us know how you make out!
