finally some catholic content. the daily lunchtime/recess shriekfest at the catholic school nextdoor can be trying especially for someone who has in the past week complained of squeaky doors and faucets. (on cue the neighbors door squeaks) i get it you are having fun, not inquisition level fun (see, i brought it back) but the only thing bloody is my spiking blood pressure and what im liable to do about it. want me to deconstruct that pun for you? theres a iron maiden spikey torture joke in there too but who was the time?

and just like that, lunch is over. ceasefire in play til 3pm.

This weekend, Tanglewood Music Center in Massachusetts is featuring concerts of the music of French composer Olivier Messiaen and bird walks. Classical music critic Jeremy Eichler says Messiaen's love and study of birds is unmatched, but he's one of many composers who have made music out of birdsong over the centuries.

Eichler (@Jeremy_Eichler) joins Here & Now's Robin Young to take a listen to some examples.

the plumbing clusterfuck continues. i cant go into it too much without raising my blood pressure to alarming heights, but on the upside i did manage to ruin the day of my upstairs neighbors even more than mine, and, of course, misery loves company. all the plumber (thats probably to generous a title) managed to do to them was promise to come around one and not show up til six, then buy the wrong sized toilet, get into a fight about carving out room in the back wall in an attempt to squeeze it in, and then once he put there original one back, set off some serious waterworks in my apartment when they tested it out. meaning he literally made whatever was wrong much much worse.

so just when he thought he was done for the night around 10 he had to come down to my place and he maybe identified the source of the leak in a corroded pipe which he then somehow temporarily patched. that was another four hours which included cleaning and carting away two large bags of rubble necessary to remove from the ceiling to reach the pipe.

and where do we stand? well, my neighbor was fed up and somewhat drunkenly berated him. i wasnt exactly going to tell him to calm down but i dont know how helpful it was. but unlike me he is ready to put his money where his mouth is. he doesnt want the plumber to come back to his apt so hes ready to pay for a plumber. and i believe him but that doesnt solve the hole in my ceiling o nce they are through.

so, stay tuned.

We had a thread somewhere about DIY-ish audio setups, but I can't find it. Just wanted to note that there is now a $33 expansion board for the Raspberry Pi that will give you, amoung other I/O goodness, SPDIF audio out from the Pi: the Wolfson Audio Card.

And reading about that led me to another add on card that accomplishes the same, at about the same price: the HiFiBerry Digi.

So while either of these will double the price of the Pi, it's still pretty cheap in the whole scheme of things. Would love to have the time to play around with this. Someday.

Thank you, Elyssa Rothe for this info about efforts in the Rockaways today! If you are able to help tomorrow, PLEASE do!

The Rockaways on November 3, 2012:

Today I went to the Rockaways with a car full of donations and what I experienced was beyond belief. I drove from JFK to Belle Harbor and the destruction far surpasses anything I was capable of imagining. Here is a collection of thoughts about the day that I hope will help with the relief effort.

MOST IMPORTANTLY:
• People need WORK GLOVES. They WANT to work, but it is very difficult without any resources. Most in demand are work gloves, heavy duty garbage bags, warm jackets, gloves and hats.
• There is NO Red Cross or FEMA assistance at this time. I drove about 6 of the 10 miles into the island, and I did not see any FEMA aid whatsoever. I saw 1 Red Cross mini-truck; that is all. There were not any signs for Red Cross shelters or assistance of any kind.
• There is ZERO power, heat, phones, internet, water or cell service. Rockaway is truly cut off from the rest of the world, and have no means of communication. Because there are no phones, there is a huge lack of organization. People don’t know where to go for resources so most people are wandering the neighborhoods looking for what they need.
• Don’t go at night. The area is pitch black at night and people are (understandably) extremely paranoid. There are signs everywhere warning that “we will shoot first, ask questions later.” Many people armed. Help as much as possible during daylight hours, and then leave the area.

Things I didn’t realize until I got there:
• It is FREEZING! I didn’t realize how much colder it would be out there because it is right on the water. It is super windy and much feels much colder than in Westchester.
• The scope of this damage is immense. I had no idea how large this area is. In my mind, I thought there would be several hundred homes. There are thousands and thousands of people on the streets, in need. 10.6 miles of land from end to end, with everything in sight damaged.
• Most of the things ruined were on the first floor. Things on the second floor are more salvageable. People were not AS in need of things that would be in the bedroom and bathroom. Most needed are things that would have been in the basement and living room. For example, I brought soap, washcloths, toothpaste and toothbrushes which were not in severe demand by homeowners. However, these things are in demand by people who were previously homeless or in distress before the hurricane.
• People are working hard all day, sweating, dirty, exhausted, but then cannot shower afterwards. They are washing by using a cold bottle of water and a washcloth. They are 5 days in.

The unexpected:
• “Organized” distribution sites don’t exist. The 2 areas I saw set-up were overflowing with goods, but most people didn’t know about them so there was no way to get the goods out. The best way to distribute items was to drive around the streets offering what we had to individuals.
• People have a small supply of diapers, but no baby wipes. If you are bringing diapers, bring wipes as well, or even just wipes alone.
• Currently, people seem to have canned goods, sandwiches and water. They also have basic clothing. There are many tee-shirts and boxes of clothing strewn throughout the streets, untaken. What is needed is WARM clothing: long sleeves, jackets, gloves, hats, blankets.

Where to go:
• B29 had a large gathering of people who would take ANYTHING- I think they had little to nothing to begin with, before the storm.
• I heard from several sources that B59 had a distribution center, but could not find it.
• B129 has a functioning indoor shelter and distribution center, but they are currently stocked.
• Most successful was to drive up and down streets distributing goods to individuals.

Items Needed:
• Work Gloves
• Heavy Duty Garbage Bags
• Flashlights, C and D Batteries
• Sweatshirts and Jackets
• Underwear
• Diapers and Wipes
• Blankets
• Towels
• Tampons
• HOT food

NY friends let me recommend two performances. One: Kitchen by the British/German group Gobsquad, now playing at The Public. Discounted and rush tickets available, see details below. We loved this show in NY last year and if the funding gods come through, will bring to PDX this Fall.

Two: Young Jean Lee's Untitled Feminist show. I am still kicking myself I left NY one day before it opened, so I haven't seen it, but everyone I know who has is raving. And it stars 6 nekkid ladies.

Want to see Gob Squad's "Kitchen.."? Don't have a deep wallet? For you a special deal: use the code word SMART and get a $40 ticket, you can use it on line, at the box office or over the phone. If that is still too steep? We will have a rush line with $20 tickets and there will most likely be availability, just drop by live before the showtime. Please re-post this to all your friends and family. The Gob Squad and I would greatly appreciate it. This is an amazing show! sexy, funny, poignant and true. I will see you there.

Germany's 'Octopus oracle' keeps perfect record

It won't come as much of a consolation to heartbroken German fans, but at least Paul, Germany's now world-famous "Octopus oracle", has maintained his perfect record.
The "psychic" creature has correctly predicted all six of Germany's World Cup games and, amid excruciating drama broadcast live on national television on Tuesday, plumped for Spain, causing anguish up and down the country.
And the eight-legged soccer soothsayer was spot on Wednesday, as Carlos Puyol's header shattered Germany's dreams of winning their fourth World Cup.

Two plastic boxes, one with a German flag and one with a Spanish, were lowered into Paul's tank at an aquarium in western Germany, each with a tasty morsel of food inside. The box which Paul opens first is adjudged to be his predicted winner. But with classic fickleness, German fans turned against their beloved octopus after he forecast a Spanish win. According to "Der Western" daily paper, there have been "a host of comments on Facebook, Twitter ... suggesting Paul should be fried, barbequed or turned into a seafood salad or paella." "Others wanted to throw him into the shark tank," the paper reported on its website

Kiva.org

We started loaning folks there a while back and have funded many projects all over the globe, once repaid we start new ones, I love it exp ones like this...

"Walangila is an entrepreneur and produces a local drink called 'Rutuku'. In the photo she is bravely raising her arm. She is an excellent customer of the Uamsho credit association, and is a 44 year old widowed mother of three.

'Rutuku' is an alcoholic beverage made from a mixture of fermentations and manioc flour, corn, sorghum etc that are heated to over 180 degrees C, then passed through a flask connected to a chimney outlet made locally. The refined drops are then collected in a flask and cooled in order to create a strong whiskey-like taste that is appreciated greatly by her customers.

The idea that “each man kills the thing he loves” has been interpreted by many—from Oscar Wilde to Paulo Coelho—but it’s always had a particular resonance in the environmental movement, where every hiking trail and ecofriendly resort inevitably destroys or alters nature in the name of love. For 69-year-old activist Ric O’Barry, the paradox is an apt expression for his cause: the preservation of dolphins.

“Everybody loves them, right?” he asks. “But be careful with the word love.”

To O’Barry, even activities as seemingly benign as paying to see dolphins perform at SeaWorld or swimming with them in captivity constitutes abuse. “We love dolphins like they’re our family—I hear that a lot. Really? You lock your family up in a room and force them to do tricks before they eat their dinner?” O’Barry says. “The dolphin is a sonic creature; its primary sense is sound. You put one in a bare concrete box with music blaring and people shouting, of course it’s stressful! If people could see them in the wild, they’d never buy a ticket to a dolphin show.”

Micro Four Thirds is a new digital camera technology developed by Panasonic and Olympus that is starting to find it's way into products.

SLR cameras were designed for the film era. The "reflex" refers to the mirror inside, which redirects light to the viewfinder and then flips out of the way when the shutter is fired, letting the light fall onto the film. Because of the mirror, the body of an SLR is relatively large, and because the lenses are so far away from the film plane (or, these days, the sensor chip), they have to be big, too. Look at the size difference between a compact camera and an SLR for an instant example of this.

Micro Four Thirds does away with the mirror, making the camera much smaller. The gimmick is that you can still change lenses, just like an SLR. And because the sensor size is standard across Micro Four Thirds cameras, the confusion of focal length multipliers disappears (although if you do want to know the 35mm equivalent, just times multiply by two), and you you don’t have to sell all your glass if you swap from one camera brand to another.
Panasonic was first to market with the G1, which really doesn't look that much smaller than a full on SLR. But now Olympus has just announced a much more compact offering. Love the retro styling on that one. This might be a really great camera, combining the best of both worlds with a super compact body, super large sensor, and interchangeable lenses. I really like it.

Last summer, even as he talked about facing jail time, Jim Stevenson couldn’t stop looking for birds. “There’s a couple yellow-crowned night herons,” he said, pointing out his living-room window. “They roost in that chinaberry tree.” He rested his eyes on the blue-gray birds. “Anyway, the cops pulled me over and searched my van and found the gun, and —”

Stevenson is a bearish, ruddy-faced 54-year-old former science teacher who is known as the ornithological guru of Galveston, Tex. Ten years ago, he moved to this Gulf Coast barrier island because of its abundant shorebirds. Enormous flocks of American avocets, willets, sanderlings, dowitchers and plovers feed in the shallow, fertile estuary of Galveston Bay. Stevenson built his house amid a clump of trees so he could always be watching birds; he lives in a bird blind. Birds are his obsession and his profession. He is the director of the Galveston Ornithological Society and publisher of the quarterly newspaper Gulls n Herons. For money, he leads bird-watching tours.

there was a point in the mid to late 60's that you had to have a peanuts sweatshirt. it was a major pop clothes item at my school in miami. i forgot which character i had but eventually i cut off the arms so that it would be sleeveless and or sported inside out with the worn nappy fleece on the outside.

You're a Complicated Man, Charlie Brown
At its peak, over 350 million people around the world read "Peanuts" every day. Its creator, Charles Schulz, led a much darker life than anyone realized, and he put his troubles into the funny pages every day. Kurt talks with biographer David Michaelis about how America’s most beloved comic strip made "depressed" a household word.

Last week in Sehwan, a town in central Sindh, half a million Sufi pilgrams......They are followers, like most Pakistani , of the heterodox Barelvi school of Sunni Islam. And so they whirled, chantd prayers, blew kisses, and smoked massive quantities of dope.....We are so anti-Taliban, claimed Ahmed Bhutto, in a room thick with insence and rose petels. We stand for love, tolerance and the great infinity.....(the economist 9/16)
